The Little Girl with the Brown Eyes
I sprinted across the field. Feeling the springy grass, and the moist, soft dirt between my toes. I crushed dandelions and wildflowers as I flew. I loved the feeling of my hair flying behind me when I ran. My frizzy red hair was out of control, but I was happy. I had hated it when I was younger. While the other little girls had straight, glossy blond hair, I was stuck with red ringlets. Church had just got out and all the children had rushed to the playground, shaking off their good shoes and swinging around like monkeys. princess. I pumped my arms and pushed myself harder. The priest had a great sermon. About the spirit of giving, because it was Thanksgiving Day weekend. The church provided a big dinner for all the homeless families out there. And then the children all sat around a big fire and listened to fairy tales. I had read to the younger children every year since I was ten. I smiled as I remembered the first day that I walked in there. A four year old girl had made a special request. She had looked at me with her soft brown eyes and begged for a book with a princess and a dragon. So the Paper Bag Princess it was. She had loved. Totally immersed in the story. Seeing that expression on her little bright face had made me go back there each year to read books to the children. And each year I saw that little girl and her big brown eyes.
